Larry
"Satch" Milam
UPDATE: Satch went home to be with the Lord on July 12, 2007.

Let’s get the scoop on our December 2006 Member of the
Month. Because of his love of baseball, Larry Milam received his nickname as a
youngster after legendary Hall of Fame pitcher, Satchel Paige. The name has
stuck with him ever since. He thinks more people know him as Satch than they do
as Larry.
Currently living in St. Albans with his wife Sandy, Satch
tells me, “I literally married the girl next door. Sandy and I were neighbors
growing up. We would sit out on the front porch and talk. One thing led to
another and I haven’t run out of things to say to her after 42 years of
marriage.”
The Milams have been coming to Spring Hill Baptist Church
since 1969. Satch mentions how the handiwork of his father is still proudly
displayed in many areas of our church – from the missionary apartment to the
coat rack in the hallway leading to the gym. After quoting his favorite verses
(Proverbs 3:5-6), Satch says, “Church is so important to me. It is one thing
we can all have in common. The people here are great.”
Satch was 19 years old when he was saved. He recalls, “I had been playing poker in the morning when my dad asked me to come to evening service at the church. When I went forward to accept Jesus, I still had the deck of cards in my pocket.” The song of invitation for that service - “Just As I Am” - quickly became Satch’s favorite hymn.
Since he has been disabled from work, Satch has spent several years going to Cross Lanes Christian School to do “whatever they need me to do”. One rewarding encounter took place last year when Satch tutored a failing student and helped him work up to a passing grade of C for the class.
Satch has seen through his fatherly eyes the life experiences of three of his own - Tracy, Terri, and Jason. To do this interview, Satch called me shortly after returning home from a hospital visit with Tracy, who is recovering from recent surgery. He says, “I can tell you that the Lord definitely answers prayer.”
Over 2,000 years ago, the Lord answered every
sinner’s prayer and we got good news about our spiritual condition when Jesus
was born to become the sacrifice for our sins. God can still answer our prayers
today if we only seek Him.
