Sally Igo

by: Tom Whitener

A common phrase kept flowing throughout the discussion with our February 2008 Member of the Month. Sally Igo has reached the stage in her life where she relishes in “peace and quiet”.  Those are the words she first used to describe what she enjoys most since moving into the home that she and Ron (her husband of 31 years) recently purchased. Sally now takes her dog, Baby, on calm strolls and catches up on the busy escapades of her two grown children (Steve and Kim) and her five grandchildren.

Born in Fairmont and raised as a Catholic, Sally began to wonder about certain spiritual things after she graduated from Marshall University with a teaching degree. “I started attending Bethel Baptist Church and I was challenged about what I believed. The Bible was there for us to read and study, instead of being told what to think”. Once her eyes were opened, she became a Christian in April 1968.

“In The Garden” is Sally’s favorite hymn.  She goes on to explain, “The words of that song can put you in a place where you can meditate and feel close to God.”  And it doesn’t take long to focus on the beautiful imagery captured in her favorite Scripture passage, Psalm 23.

Sally first came to Spring Hill Baptist Church in early 1986. Soon after, she felt blessed to join 13 other people from the church on a tour of the Holy Land that same year. Sally even braved her first airplane flight in the process. The nine-day visit allowed her to see many interesting sights, including Jericho, Bethlehem, the Garden of Gethsemane, and Jesus’ tomb. “It was a truly a life changing experience,” Sally comments, “I can tell you when we got back, Easter took on a whole new meaning for me.”

One touching experience Sally remembers from that trip was a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee . “We went out to the middle and stopped the boat. It was so quiet and we had a brief devotion there. That moment brought tears to my eyes.”

Her stint as church librarian began after the library moved several years ago from the room which now known as the “teen room” to its current location from across the nursery. To date, she boasts that the list of available books spans over 61 pages of typewritten entries, but any title can be quickly found on her computer. Giving her best sales pitch, Sally remarks, “We have a nice variety - from novels and children’s books to commentaries and subjects for special interest groups.  We have something for everybody. I encourage you to come and check it out.”

After working many years with children in our Sunday School and Vacation Bible School programs, Sally enjoys the “peace and quiet” of overseeing the library. She jokes, “I took this job because books don’t talk back.”  Sally’s quip doesn’t explain the often loud and loyal support for her favorite collegiate team, but that’s “another story.”
