Peggy
Bailey
by: Tom Whitener
Peggy Bailey knows how to put her time into something. She
has been playing the church’s organ off and on during a span of 50 years. She
invested 29 years and 8 months into a career at Union Carbide before she retired
a decade ago. She mentions that she is one of the longest standing members of
our church. Let’s strike a chord to find out more about our June 2006 Member
of the Month.
Peggy currently resides in Spring Hill and has two adult children, Robin and Doug. She also enjoys spending time with her 4 grandchildren. Growing up in a family with an older brother and a younger sister herself, Peggy told me, “Being the middle child wasn’t always a bad thing. You do know who my brother is (church treasurer, Ray Hundley).” After I prodded her for some “good stories” about Ray, I quickly retracted my request and reassured her that maybe it was better if we didn’t have that information.
As a 15 or 16 year old girl sitting on the stairs, Peggy was led to the Lord by Missionary John Schone. She recalls, “It was so amazing to see him many years later and he knew me by name.” Peggy also informed me that the Lucia Missionary Circle in our church is named after John’s wife, Lucia.
Peggy appreciates the way that Spring Hill Baptist Church stands on Biblical principles. “Our church teaches it, believes it, and lives it,” she says, “So many of our people give of their time and show a willingness to serve Him.”
From taking piano lessons when she was in grade school, Peggy would later adopt the organ as her preferred musical instrument of choice. She explains, “Some people aren’t aware that playing the organ is different from playing the piano. It is a totally different touch and there is more for your hands and feet to do.”
Peggy’s favorite verse is Philippians 4:19. Even though her favorite hymn is “Amazing Grace”, I asked Peggy what her favorite hymn is to play. She answered it was “One Day Too Late” and further elaborated, “The music is just beautiful, but the words are very sad because they speak of someone who waited one day too late in realizing that they needed to accept Jesus.”
“With all those years of playing, I should be better than I actually am, but I enjoy doing it,” Peggy adds. Now that she has overcome some recent health concerns, Peggy is happy to return to the seat that she has occupied for so many occasions to play the organ again.
