Roberta Murphy

by: Tom Whitener

There’s nothing wrong with staying “close to home”. Our June 2007 Member of the Month currently works as a Registered Nurse for Thomas Memorial Hospital - the same hospital where she was born. Being there for others just comes natural to Roberta Murphy - whether she is watching her 95 year-old grandmother, watching a certain softball pitcher or making plans about becoming a first-time grandmother herself.

Roberta’s home in Cross Lanes is shared with David (her husband of 27 years) and teenage daughter Marla, who plays on the high school softball team. Her other daughter, Megan, lives in New Hampshire and is expecting a baby in November. Roberta graciously acknowledges, “We were very fortunate because our daughters have never really bucked us about going to church.”

Coming to Spring Hill Baptist Church all her life, Roberta accepted Jesus as her personal Savior in Junior Church when she was 5 or 6 years old. She continues, “I decided to re-dedicate my life in high school and became very active with the youth group.  I made a real commitment to my faith after college and starting a family of my own.” Nowadays, you might be able to locate Roberta in the church nursery looking after our little ones.

When asked about Bible verses that are significant to her, Roberta responds, “Proverbs 3:5&6 affects me…how it talks about trust and relying on God.” Roberta admits that she doesn’t have one all-time favorite hymn, but she offers several songs of inspiration, including “Amazing Grace”, “Something Beautiful”, and “Our God Is An Awesome God.”

As a child, Roberta spent time designing and arranging items on the bulletin board in her room. Her creative efforts have been updated on her recent scrap-booking projects. Roberta is getting more comfortable with using technology to make photo collages on the computer. She says, “In fact, David and I tend to fight over the camera to see who will be the one to take the best pictures.” Even if Roberta says she enjoys the scenic beauty of nature, David often jokes, “There has to be a mall nearby.”

Roberta feels a special bond inside our church. She concludes, “It’s a family atmosphere around here. Everyone has a real closeness for each other. And I love that the Word of God is always preached here.”
