Jim Hudson

by: Tom Whitener

Jim Hudson, our May 2006 Member of the Month, has made a career transporting things from point A to point B. He got a real test when he once drove his tractor trailer through Washington, DC in rush hour traffic. “I wouldn’t advise anyone to do that,” Jim says of the experience. Now is the time to “deliver the goods” on Jim Hudson.

Jim calls St. Albans home, and he has lived in the same house for over 17 years with his wife, Barbara, whom he married in 1983. He is also a step-father of two grown children, Marty and T.G. Recently retired, he spends most of his time now taking care of Barbara (who is in need of a liver transplant) and Marty’s 5-month old baby (who is in need of Grandpa’s attention).

Attending Spring Hill Baptist Church with Barbara since 1988, he clearly remembers his first invitation to attend here from Sandy and “Satch” Milam. Over the years, Jim has seen some changes, and he is currently impressed with our “top-notch leadership” and what he describes as people “running and working” throughout the church.

Jim was saved later in life, when he was 48 years old. In a bubble-filled bathtub, he asked Jesus to be his personal savior. Jim laughs as he points out, “I guess it goes to show you that you can accept the Lord at any time and in any place.”

“Amazing Grace” is Jim’s favorite hymn. “No doubt about that,” he states. Jim also claims the 23rd Psalm as his favorite passage. He explains, “While many may look at these verses for comfort when someone dies, the words speak to me about what God is doing now for the living.”

Jim ran a tractor trailer for the Teamsters in Ohio for 14 years and worked for the State of West Virginia for 21 ½ years carrying surplus property. Today, his cargo has changed from cars and computers to neighborhood kids. Every Wednesday night, Jim drives the church van and picks them up to attend AWANA.  “These are the kids we really want to reach.” Jim says, “If one child goes home with a lesson from the Bible, there’s no telling how it could impact their family and friends.” We can all appreciate Jim’s drive for this moving ministry.
